Treatment for Music video

The song that we chose for our music video is called Heavy from ‘The Rasmus’ which is 4 minutes long. The genre of out song is rock as it involves elements of love and emotion. The theme is quite slow and sad as it will show the feelings of a boy towards a girl who leaves him. The primary target audience for our music video will be young people and teenagers as this is the sort of music statistically young people listen to. There no limit of age as we have chosen the secondary audience to be adults and others who are interested to watch this.

In our music video we will use different camera angles and different shot types to represent various feelings and emotions to symbolise what is happening within our music video in the mise-en-scene. Special effects such as cut fade and dissolve create such transitions between each scene from one scene to another which attract the attention of the audience’s eye whereas in our group we will aim to produce such effects to make our music video unique and unconventional. We also would want to add an effect which is a black and white effect often used to show flashbacks as we also will be showing flashbacks to show the memories that the boy has of the girl.

In our music video we have a narrative that we are going to be showing while our music is being played. We have chosen our song and by looking at the lyrics we have decided what type of story to show depending of the words that have been said.

So our narrative starts off with a boy (the main boy) with his girlfriend in a flashback as they are both very happy however he is then shown in front of a black background singing, and close ups to his face are shown to show his emotions as he seems very upset. Whenever the chorus comes we will show the same background and the boy singing however the parts that are left in the verses we will show different days where he follows his girlfriend around as she is with her new boyfriend. We show close ups of how he feels and what she feels about him. During the end we will show the boy following her as usual but then he has a car accident and he dies, she runs towards him as we will show shot reverse shots and close ups to show the emotion of the girl as she cries and if left with a tear in her eye.

For our music video we will need 8 actors which consist of 1 boy; who will be the main character, the girl and her new boyfriend, a few friends that will be with the girl as we will show the boy being ignored. For these 8 characters we will be holding auditions within our college and making posters which will be around the whole college building. We will invite people and ask them to play a little role and if we like it we will ask them to act for us in our music video, by doing these auditions we will see which people are suitable for playing a role for us.

We have many different locations which will be shown in during our music video. We will show places like a park, a flat etc. we main prop that we will use is a Red hat, which will symbolise and represent many things such as love, piece, rock. This will make our music video look unconventional and unique.

Audition Results

When we had our auditions we had around 3 to 4 people who came and showed us their acting as we explained to them about our whole theme of the music video.
Mostly they where students who did preforming arts and their skills where really good in acting. We got down their Name, Number, Roll Number and Email address, as they also said that they would let other students who are interested know about this for the following week.

We have now decided that we will be a holding a second audition next Friday at lunch time in the same place.

Starting our Storyboarding

Here we have actually started making the storyboard as a group by analysing each scene with the camera effects and angles. we have not made this in real detail we have just shown what will be in the scene and have written abit about what the image is showing. Also we have numbered each different scene and written how long the scene would eventually last.

Analysing music video's outside our genre generally

I have researched many different music videos so that I could get ideas about what to do in my music video and what to include. I have watched different ways that music videos have been put together to be unique in their own very way, as our group have decided to put many different camera angles and shot sizes to make our music video match its narrative. In our music video we want to represent the emotions of a character that is very upset about his love life as our group has decided to include flashbacks to show what has happened in the past so symbolise his feelings and emotions, therefore I have tried to look for such video’s which are about feelings and emotions so that I could get an idea on how the camera has been used including the location and close ups.

The first music video that I have watched is called “Ramzi - Love is blind” I have found this music video on YouTube as around 4,047,731 have watched and commented on this. In my opinion I believe that this music video is really successful as there are my different media techniques which have been used within this. The most important part of this music video that has inspired me is the fact that at the beginning of this music video the boy who is singing the song is standing in front of a dark background which reveals how he is feeling inside however the colour black also connotes being sad and upset which is what the message is trying to show. Whereas by watching this music video I have been inspired to make the boy also have a dark black background where he sings in front of it. In this music video’s flashbacks are used, ones that we thought we would also include and by watching an example we definitely would want to include flashbacks in our music video. Different media techniques have also been applied within this music video such as eye angle, close ups, long shot, over the shoulder shot which makes their music video very unconventional. We also want our music video to be unique and unconventional. The total length this music video is actually just under 4 minutes and I believe that within this time to show a narrative is quite difficult as people who have made this music video have been successful in making this video match the song and the narrative at the same time. For us to do this type of thing we will need to work hard and look at every lyric of this line to match what the mise-en-scene would be. The primary target audience for this music video would mainly be teenagers as match the genre of this music video which is love. Also the primary audience which is young people and teenagers would also be able to tell that they are the target as the music type would interest them, its estimated that around 89% of teenagers are mostly interested in this type of music as just by looking at the people who have watched this clip alone are mostly teenagers. On the other hand the actors within this music video are teenagers themselves which also represents the primary target audience that they would automatically see who this is targeting. Whereas there is no age limit for this music video, everyone can watch this as the secondary target audience for this music video would actually be adults which are 30+. They would also be interested in this music video, even though they might not be the first target some elderly might like this type of music video, this has made us think that even though our primary target audience might be young people we could also get feedback from the secondary target audience which would be elders. Most of the time I have noticed that music video’s get more popular with celebrity endorsement. However in this case there was no celebrity in this music video but it still achieved a high success, which shows me and my group that it doesn’t matter who we chose for the music video, it’s just about how well they fit in and how well they play their roles. There are many different special effects that have been used in this music video such as fade when the main character is singing the song. This make the song look professional and it catches the attention of the audience’s eye. Also when the flashback is being shown the black and white effect has been used to symbolise the past, our group have also thought of using such black and white effects as we are still deciding. The costume that have been used are just normal clothes worn in a day to day routine which I believe reflects reality and gives it that realistic effect that it’s based on a true story.

Throughout this music video there is no moral or message, it is just revealing how the boy feels in this scenario and what his friend who has left him, it’s clear and has a strong simple narrative for the audience to see which is what also want to aim to have. Mostly close-ups have been shown to represent the expression and emotions, the representation a media text matters the most depending on what the text is and this music video the represented different features of a music video really well by showing a clear narrative which matches the song, camera angles, shot sizes which location and costume. It all combines together in a good way which is why this music video has inspired me a lot.

The second music video that I watched was called ‘Arash, Broken angel’ this music video also revolves around our main theme and genre which is about love and emotion. I really love this music video as the mise-en scene is really very good as it has a very unique video put with the song. It starts off with the girl sitting on a mountain and a lot of images falling on the ground. The unique thing about this part is that when the girl is lying down on the ground the sunlight reflects down and gives the grass a golden look which really contrasts with the white dress that she is wearing holding the white images. I think that this look is really good which is why this music video is really unconventional. Also the song that is being sung at that time is non-diegetic as it’s a voice over of the girl and what is going on in her mind. There is a close of from a bird’s eye view angle which is really slow that zooms into her showing her looking at the pictures. This technique is simple but gives a strong effect. The main thing that has inspired me is these simple techniques that have been used as our group has also decided to include these effects. However magical effects have also been used in this music video such as the boy disappearing and the girl coming into the scene. These special effects are the main reason why this video has been popular, unique and unconventional.

During the beginning the use of costumes has been really eye catching giving it a strong effect however as the narrative carries on the clothes worn after that are seem to be normal clothes on a day to day routine. This represents that the producer of this music video is trying to show flashbacks so that the audience could just automatically realise that the scene is representing something that has happened in the past. We will also have something in which the audience will know that we are showing flashbacks.

There are various different locations within this music video such as the park, house, the river and the road. I think that these locations are good as they match with the story that is being shown. However in this music video there is one thing that I actually like, which is the part when the boy is singing and there is some animation at the back, it looks as if the boy is dreaming and is in his own little world which also is something very different and unique.

The length of this music video is 3 minutes 23 seconds, so round about 3-4 minutes. I have noticed that the majority of music videos are actually just 3-4 minutes long and I think that if a music video goes over 4 minutes to 5 or 6 then the music video would seem too long and may lose audience’s attention however our music video will also be between 3-4 minutes long.

The celebrity endorsement here in this music video is a little different as this person ‘Arash’ is also famous for other songs and he has been successful in those songs aswel as this one. The celebrity is becoming quite popular as YouTube shows a link under the music video of Facebook; http://www.facebook.com/arashlabaf, this represents that people are getting attracted to him and his songs as they comment and like his songs on his Facebook. This is a way to get your audience attracted to your song and to let them know about any new songs that he will be producing. In our case we are only making one music video which we will be actually posting on YouTube for people to watch, however if did create more songs then we would have made a website, page or some sort of place where we could be able to hear feedback and tell others about our forthcoming song.

There are many scenes which cut away and joined onto another scene which also makes this music video look more attractive, the way it cuts interests the audience as it feels as if something will happen. The way the narrative is shown is really very unique. The narrative is very simple and unconventional. The main primary target audience for this music video would again be young people and teenagers as they are the ones who are mostly interested in this type of music and theme. The way the animations are shown would just automatically make the target audience know who they are as these types of special effects are something that young people find something and get interested in. on the other hand the secondary target audience would be adults who would also find this type of music interesting when comparing it to the narrative.

Something that is really different about this music video is that this song involves two different languages mixed together. English and Arabic, these two languages are from total different places from the world. People who don’t know how to speak Arabic would still be interested in this song because the way the actors have acted what is being said no one would have a problem to understand on what is being said. This is what I think makes a music video achieve the highest points, making the target audience understand something by the mise-en- scene even though they don’t know what is being said.

Overall I think that what has inspired me the most about this music video is the mise-en-scene and the way non-diegetic and diegetic sound has been presented.  First of all I like the opening clip the way they have decided to show the opening of this music video the contrast, and the second thing that inspired me was about the voice over and the way the girl was sleeping and there was the voice of the man which showed that she was dreaming about him.

Out of all three music videos that have watched I loved this music video, the way the different colours have made this music video look more attractive makes it very unique. The theme of this music video is very different to the other two. This music video is about love but it’s not emotional and depressing as them. This music video shows a boy and how he is eager to find a girl in the city. The music video shows him taking images of different girls which match the song lyrics of how he is looking for a girl for himself. I would say the primary target audience is teenagers as throughout this whole music video all you could see are young people and teenagers, just by looking at this teenagers would automatically assume that they are targeted for this music video. The secondary target audience would be people who are older, adults who sometimes prefer to listen to this sort of music such as people between the ages of 30-40.

The transitions effects which are used from each scene to another have a good effect on the whole thing. When the music is slow the camera slowly goes pass Iyaz’s and his friends face where the transitions from each scene to another is slow and has a fade effect, however when the music speeds with the beat the transitions from each scene cuts off really fast which shows that even the transitions have a their own tune which makes it look really good. By noticing this I have actually realised that even the way one scene follows to the next scene it really matters whether you decide to use an effect or not such as cut, fade dissolve etc.

Sometimes music videos have theme colours such as only dark colours used in one video or just normal day to day colours; this is mainly to match the theme and the mood of the music video. In this music video the theme is quite lively as bright colours have been used. The director of this video has also located this where there is strong sunlight and that I could really show the different colours that all the different girls are wearing. Each girl is wearing a different colour and the way it has been represented and shown within the video is very unconventional. They represent the colours of the ‘rainbow’ which also link to what their lyrics are actually about. They are trying to convey that every girl has a different uniqueness and they have tried to show this in a very different way which in my opinion makes it really eye catching and attractive.

There are many different features which are used to make a music video successful and one of the features is the camera angles and the shot types used. The camera angles used in this music video and used in a way to start of the music video. The opening scene starts off with a girls shoe’s with a low camera angle, Pan is a camera angle which is actually used here where the camera is actually at a low level and then moves as the girl is walking. The camera angle tracks the girl at first but then as she walks off the boy in the background come into the scene and begins to sing. The way the music video starts off is very different and something which not many different video’s start off with.

At first the song that is being sung is non-diegetic however when the girl walks of the boy is sitting in the background where the non-diegetic voiceover becomes diegetic as he is shown sitting there and singing it.

The words in this music video are repeated constantly and every time he says ‘Pretty girls’ there is a different girl in the mise-en-scene which creates a kind of pattern in the music video which is something very unconventional.

There is only one location in this music video which is an open place, probably on a park side. There is a board at the back where the girls stand, the board has different colours and graffiti all over it which shows that it’s a place where they could relax it also connotes the target audience as I have mentioned earlier. This shows that to make a successful music video we don’t have to have different locations, we could make different experiments with the different features of a good music video to make ours unconventional and something which will attract our target audience too.

Music video Case Study (Rock genre)

In my first case study, I took a song from the band that we chose our song from our music video, I decided to do this to see what other songs they have and also the way they film and show their narrative, moral etc. to the target audience.

This song from ‘The ramus’ is called ‘October and April’ this song has a music video which is very interesting, unique and unconventional which is why I have chosen this music video to discuss why it has inspired me.

The way this music video starts off is really different as the mise-en scene shows the target audience following a white bird with a bird’s eye view angel, it shows an establishing shot of the city which looks beautiful with the purple colour sky, and the purple would connote the feelings of love and emotion. The camera then tracks the bird from the sky up to the man who starts singing the song which I believe is a really good opening scene as this is what makes it unique the most,

The different effects that have been used in this music video are really different as we can see the use of special effect being used in the sky at the beginning with the storm of the different colour effects. The use of colour is also very unconventional as the director has showed a colourful sky and a dark earth, as this scene has been filmed in the dark, we can see dark buildings and as we are introduced to the main character we can see that he is also wearing black to fit in within the atmosphere, the blackness symbolises darkness which connotes the genre of the music video which might be about the something sad most probably love,.

The background music that is being played at the same time is also very slow which matches the mise-en-scene. As there is a long shot of the man in the scene the voice in the song seems to be non-diegetic which I think is a good technique to represent the feelings of that character while having him in the same scene with darkness however when a close up is shown to his face we can see his emotions as the song becomes diegetic.

The special effects used in this music video are very unique as the director has tried to show something different through two different opposites. The man in the music video is wearing black and has black smoke coming behind him, however the women in the music video is wearing something totally opposite as she is wearing white with white smoke behind her, this shows the contrast between the two characters as it highlights their personality within themselves. It is trying to show the target audience how different they are from themselves and maybe the reason of the differences between them.

The primary target audience for this music video would be teenagers and young people as in this music video there is an essence of something magical, with the flames and smoke, the secondary target audience of this music video would be other elders who like this sort of music.

When the girl is introduced in the music video, there from low to high angle showing a bridge where the girl is standing, this represents the different statuses between the two characters meaning that the women has a higher status than the man as she symbolises a fairy. The different types of camera angles and shots make this music video very interesting. Camera angles such a close up and medium shots are used to show the feelings and emotions of the different characters. In our music video we will also be using these angles to show how the characters are feeling at different stages of the music video, this would make the audiences fit in as they would know exactly how the characters are feeling. As the characters are walking and singing there is a close up of their expressions for a constant 10-15 seconds, this has inspired me to include this technique in my music video as it looks really good, it involves the target audience and seems as if the characters are sharing their thoughts with the target audience.

Celebrity endorsement is also something which attracts audiences, and especially in music videos this technique is used to promote primary and secondary target audiences depending on what type of genre and music type it is. In this music video the two characters are famous for their band but not as famous as other singers and actors, however still this music video has become quite popular as around 2,616,404  have watched and liked it, as a result this concludes that our music video does not have to have famous people as it mostly depends on the narrative, song, effects and the way the message (if there is one) is being showed to the target audience.

The location of this music video is actually very unique as the two lovers are shown walking on two different levels possibly representing a hierarchy, this also connotes the narrative in the music video and possible the link between the two of them.

The costume worn in this music video also plays a big role as the colour of conduct represents the characters within the music video. The women is wearing a white dress which connotes purity and freshness; showing a positive character. However the man in the music video is wearing black which is a sign of something dark, mysterious; a negative side. Also this dark black outfit and dark black smoke behind him may leave many questions in the target audiences mind as they might be wondering about the reason behind it. This shows me that even the costumes worn in a music video can tell part of the narrative and even can give the genre away.

This song is from a rock band called I’d come for you. I have chosen this song because the video is very unique and the way the narrative, editing techniques and shot types have been used looks really good therefore analysing this music video might just inspire me to include various techniques in our music video as well.

The length of this music video is 4 minutes 23 seconds; this is an average timing that I have seen in nearly every music video, as I believe that that’s how long our music video will also be. If a music video is any longer than 5 minutes than majority of the target audience it tended to get bored.

The music video starts off with a long shot of a girl hurrying in the kitchen, as she hurries in there is a close up of a picture frame of her and a boy together, this automatically tells the target audience that this music video is about love. This is a good way to symbolise a genre of a love song. After that scene there is a cut which leads onto the next scene which is an establishing shot of the boy who is singing the song, the way the camera is used to slow zoom into him singing is actually a really good effect, as the slowness of the song matches with the camera effect.

Another think which I really liked about this music video is the fact that the boy who is singing is the same boy who is show playing the instruments which connotes his feelings towards the girl he is singing for, the colours at the back also represent different emotions as the colour black symbolises darkness and sadness which reflects the main theme of the song. the white colour bulbs which in the scene are supposed to light up the stage create double meaning, which is that there is a little bit of brightness in his life and that the contrast of black and silver/white represent the dark night sky with the shiny stars which show the target audience that even though he is sad about his life, there is hope still. To me this double meaning technique is really unique and unconventional as not only is represents the characters feelings but also it makes the narrative even more interesting.

The most important thing about a music video is the narrative; if there is one.  As I think that this music video has a really clear and simple narrative, as the way the different pieces and flashbacks are put together is really very interesting. The way the story is shown to the target audience is the reason why they have got a lot of popularity, as on YouTube 6,531,607 have viewed this music video as they have got 33,798 likes. In my opinion I believe that this is a really good achievement for them.

The primary target audience for this type of music video would be teenagers and people who are interested in this type of song/genre. However the secondary target audience for this music video would be others, older audiences who also like these types of songs.

The song that has been sang is diegetic and also non diegetic as the same time as sometimes he is in the scene and in other scenes where he is not there is becomes a voice over. Shot reverse shots, extreme close ups and establishing shots are used to express the emotions of the character.

I have chosen this music video as my last case study for many different reasons, something different that this music has is a female voice, therefore I thought that analysing a female song voice would have different conventions and mise-en-scene in it.

The one thing that has really inspired me to analyse this music video is the location of this music video. Before making any music video, a director mostly focuses on the different locations so that it could make their music video interesting and attractive, however this music video that I have chosen is very unconventional as throughout the whole music video there is only one location which shocks me, as the camera angles, shot types and sizes make this music video really very unique. The way that it has been shot really expresses the girl’s feelings and emotions without getting the audience bored.

The music video starts with an empty dark room where the camera angle is at an high angle which slowly drifts down to the ground to the eye angle to a girl who is laying down on the floor, the clothes that she is wearing is of normal casual clothes; a black dress. However even the colour of the dress matters to the scene and here it does as it matches the whole theme colour and the mood of the scene at that time. The black, dull dark colours represent how she is feeling. The way she is on the floor all lonely straight away shows the target audience that this music video is all about love and loneliness considering how lonely she is.

As the camera gets to her face she gets up slowly as the camera slowly moves with her as she sits up. The way the camera slowly moves along with her it creates a great effect. This suggests to me that we don’t need absolute big effects to make our music video look attractive, even small effects make a good music video in the end.

Something that really inspired me was that the location of this music video is really very unique. As many directors when making a music video mostly concentrate on the locations however in this music video there is just one location which makes this music video really very unique. Throughout the whole music video the location is really dark and damp to match the mood, the target audience would not get bored of this music video because the way its directed just in one setting.

The primary target audience for this music video is people who are interested in this type of music such as the young teenage age however the secondary target audience would be other people such as adults and older people who would listen this type of music.

Poster for Auditions

.We have decided to make a poster and we will be putting it around the college building, for the moment we are working on our production work therefore today we are working on our Storyboard, this is our Poster that we made for our auditions.
